The myth of Dalit Holika

Claim

Magazines like Feminism in India claim that Holi is premised on the burning of Holika – a Bahujan woman. The Vedic and Puranic stories which dictate our festivals rely on suppressing the story of the lower castes, and it is they who are painted as asuras.

Fact

Holika was not a Bahujan woman, she was a Kattar Brahman woman. She was the daughter of the great Brahman sage Kashyapa. The burning of Holika has no caste angle.
