B.N. Rau - The man who wrote constitution of India

When we talk about the Indian Constitution, One name is synonymous with its creation - Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. But there’s another key figure who was as important as Ambedkar if not more: Sir Benegal Narsing Rau.

In 1946, B.N Rau was appointed as the Constitutional Advisor to the Constituent Assembly. His job? To craft the first draft of what would become one of the longest written constitutions. He traveled globally, studying constitutions to bring the best ideas home.

Enter Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the Chairman of the Drafting Committee. Ambedkar’s genius was in refining Rau’s draft, defending it in debates, and ensuring it reflected India’s diverse needs. But let’s not forget, Rau’s draft was the starting point.

while Ambedkar became the ‘Father of the Indian Constitution’, Rau’s role often fades into the background. Ambedkar himself praised Rau’s work, but public memory and history often overlook the man behind the scenes.

So let’s remember B.N. Rau, not to diminish Ambedkar’s monumental contribution, but to celebrate the collaborative spirit that birthed our Constitution.
