Earliest known written reference to Bharatvarsha

1st Century B.C. inscription of King Kharavela of Kalinga In Udaygiri, Odisha mentions the word “Bharatvarsha”.

The inscription is called the “Hathigumpha inscription”. The inscription has been impacted by weather changed over time and hence, reading it has been hard, and different interpretations have been made about it.
