Princess Suriratna of Korea

Image

This is a joint stamp issued by India and Korea in 2019 commemorating princess Suriratna. Princess Suriratna (known to Koreans as Heo Hwang-ok) was a princess who claimed descent from the ancient Ikshvaku dynasty of Ayodhya. According to the ancient Korean chronicle named Samguk Yusa, princess Suriratna came to Korea from Ayuta (Ayodhya). She became the queen to king Suro who founded the ancient Karak kingdom (1st century CE), which is one of the earliest states of Korea. Today, historians say, descendants of the couple number more than six million, which is roughly about 10% of the South Korean population.
