How Aligarh Got Its Name
The real name of Aligarh is Ramgarh. It was founded by Rajputs in antiquity and had a renowned fort named Koil. In the 18th century, Shia commander Najaf Khan renamed the city “Aligarh”. Yet, even in the 19th century, Hindus called it “Ramgarh”.
In 1856, collector Hutchison wrote that “Najaf Ali Khan, a Mughal general, renamed Ramgarh to Aligarh”.
