Islamization of Lakshadweep
Today, Lakshadweep is 97% Muslim. But just 250 years ago, it was overwhelmingly Hindu. Hindu family names are found throughout Lakshadweep. One could still find local Ramayana folk songs which are being replaced by Muslim songs. All Mosques show Hindu architecture.
There were never any large scale invasion on Lakshadweep by any Islamic army. How did this transformation happen?
Local folk songs recount how Sufis came to Lakshadweep from Mecca and raped local girls. Many women committed suicide by jumping into the sea. These folk songs are still remembered and sung by some local Muslims of Lakshadweep.
