Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad and the Indian History Books

After independence, India’s first education minister Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad convened an editorial Committee to author history syllabus book on India’s Independence.

He selected renowned historian RC Majumdar as a principal member.

Maulana said - “Prof Majumdar, I want you to write a book on the history of Indian independence. Make sure to write that Muslim soldiers of Bahadur Shah Zafar started the freedom movement in India. They were the first freedom fighters of India. Cultivate the image of Hindu Muslim Bhai Bhai.

RC Majumdar- “But this is incorrect. The Muslim soldiers of Bahadur Shah Zafar conducted raids on Hindu villages. They ended up desecrating a temple. They called themselves Ghazis(Jihadis) and vowed to reestablish the Mughal state & reimpose sharia all over India”

Maulana-“Do as I say or you will be out of our project'

RC Majumdar left the project and wrote his own book on Indian independence.

This is how Indian history textbooks were written by the Indian government. These are the same books Indian schoolchildren read even to this day.
